[info]slyviolet got me.
1. Reply to this post, and I'll pick four or five of your userpics that I like.
2. Make an entry and talk about the icons I've selected.
3. Other people will then comment on your entry and you'll do the same as I've done for you.
4. Thus, we will help create a NEVER-ENDING STREAM of icon squee.

*Edited to add detail on when I use these icons.

I've gone through several Dexter icons before I finally settled on this one. (I love animated icons the most, now that I know where to find them!) For starters, I'm a huge Dexter fan. Plus, I like using this icon whenever I play little blog/internet games like this one. The threat of malevolence behind the image makes it more fun for me.

I haven't actually used this icon in a post, yet. It's a picture of Haley and Elan from "Order of the Stick," a webcomic that hilariously pokes fun at Dungeons & Dragons players. I mean to use the icon to illustrate romance/passion between geeks.

This one I custom made. It's Blind Mag from "Repo! The Genetic Opera." I liked that moment of the movie, where Mag advises Shilo: "A sheltered rose needs some room to bloom outside her bedroom." Hmmm... Not sure WHY that would strike a chord with me. LOL.

Also custom made. Brother Justin from Carnivale in the climactic season finale. I can't honestly think of a more effective display of aggro behavior. Eyes turning black, ripping off one's shirt, howling, and moving in for the kill... Perfect for a post about infuriating events/behavior.

Ahh, it's Agent Cooper contemplating his cup of coffee. *sigh* Cooper and I are like THIS *fingers crossed*. What can I say? I'm a Twin Peaks junkie.

Writer's Block: Animal Instinct

What creature would you choose as your spirit animal?

I've always felt magnetism toward hummingbirds and otters.

Hummingbirds: tiny, fast, fierce, beautiful. I thought I read somewhere that they symbolized joy to Native Americans. There is something magical about them to me, and I always stop dead in my tracks whenever I see one.

Otters: I love how sleek and slippery they are. They move through water gracefully. Otters seem like they know how to relax and have a good time, which I greatly admire.

I also like how versatile puffins are, as they can swim, dive and fly. But they don't come to my mind as readily.

How about you?

The Repo man is coming...

OMG!!! "Repo! The Genetic Opera" kicked A*S last night!!! After compulsively listening to pieces of the music online for over a week, seeing the whole thing from beginning to end knocked my socks off. Anthony Stewart Head, Alexa Vega and Sarah Brightman were particularly fantastic.

Plus, there was a costume contest for the fans, and a Q&A session afterwards with co-creator and performer, Terence Zdunich. (He played the Graverobber.) It was like the best of Comic-Con.

It's definitely not for everyone. (For starters, it has plenty of cringe-worthy gory moments, like "Sin City.") As Terence said, the film thrives do to its underground cult following, and he wouldn't have it any other way. At this point, Repo! is only gaining popularity by word of mouth. I wanted to do my part to spread the word.

New Growth

Well to wrap up the Earthdawn "drama," I did meet with Phil (the GM) on Friday. We had a lovely breakfast and talked. I was convinced that there was no ill will towards me leaving. Phil stated that if any other player decided to leave the game, it would be easy to make their characters NPCs, or to phase them out of the party. However, mine is an important political figure (who is steadily growing in power and influence), and it would be too disruptive to have her disappear. It's ironic, isn't it? One of my primary thrills from playing this game is the chance to feel important. Now I have a character who is so important that she must go on without me.

This phenomena is what my friend Scott referred to as a "plot train," in which the plot is an oncoming train, which cannot be stopped or diverted from its course. In the end, I did give Phil my character info.

I played one last game yesterday (for 6 hours), and officially said TTYL to the other gamers. They seemed understanding about my reasons for leaving. I said I would like to come back sometime, maybe over summer vacation. It will take time for me to get used to watching another player run my character. When I come back, I could play one of the NPCs, an obsidiman warrior, an illusionist (who for some unknown reason likes to prance around naked), or the illusionist's consort, who resembles the bride of Frankenstein because another player chopped her in half.

But first things first. I have a 10 page paper that's due next Monday. I need to interview 3 people before writing it, and I plan to hunt these people down at church this morning.

Thanksgiving was fun, too. Everyone loved my sweet potatoes. And certain family members gasped in shock when I told them that Malibu rum was the secret ingredient. Tee hee hee.

So my GM wants to meet me on Friday for breakfast. He told me that my character can't be lost because she is too important to the story. He wants me to bring copies of my character info so a new player he just invited can play that character, now that I'm gone. I feel horrible about it. I felt a sense of ownership regarding that character, and now some random guy is going to jump in and play her in my place??

It feels like I wouldn't be welcomed back into the game, even if someday I wanted to be. I feel incredibly hurt. And I don't know how to describe this to a non-gamer like Sean, who tells me not to take it personally.

Anyone?

Shake some dust
I demonstrated with the No on Prop 8 campaign from 6-10 last night. We went downtown to Horton Plaza and then back to Hillcrest. I feel shaky this morning. I am REALLY uncomfortable approaching people on the street. I am always one of those people who hates to be approached by people with clipboards. I think I'm still on an adrenaline rush from the experience.

I felt I needed to do something to show my support, and I wish I was more at ease with asking people to volunteer for the cause. I signed up to help out on Election Day, too.

Reflections on being a grad student

I'm trying to figure out how much my desire for a laptop computer is due to its convenience... and how much it's "keeping up with the Joneses." It seems like everyone around me has a laptop, and I feel covetous when I see one. It's weird being a grad student and seeing people using them during lectures. I don't remember that as an undergraduate.

It has been 9 years since I was a college freshman. (Aiiiiiieeeee!) Here are other things that seem different 9 years later:

-The use of the online BlackBoard program:
-to send e-mails to fellow classmates
-to review the syllabus, and lecture notes
-to view assignments & course readings
-Feeling compelled to research everything online, rather than seek out an academic advisor
-I walked into the financial aid office several months ago to get information on loans, and was told (almost dismissively) that
everything I wanted to know should be online. I was disappointed, and had hoped for some face-to-face interaction regarding this
          issue.
-Going home promptly after class is over. And home is somewhere ELSE. With a completely separate social circle. Not on campus.
-Dismissing the idea of buying University apparel, in light of it being "too expensive"
-Knowing that many of my peers are juggling spouses, children and jobs in addition to their coursework
-Feeling like my coursework is directly linked and relevant to today's social/political climate

I feel a strange sense of deja vu. I'm excited at being a student again, bowled over by the beauty of the campus and the library. At the same time, I feel older, though I probably don't look it. When I walk through the campus, I feel distant, more like an observer than a participant. It's a bizarre experience. Part of me wants to be a student (in some capacity) forever. It's liberating to stimulate my mind and to surround myself with other academic people. But it's weird to never want to leave the ivory tower one day... isn't it?

My new favorite miniseries

Holy Moly!!

Not since discovering "The Twilight Zone" and "Memento" have I been so excited by science fiction & mystery genres. For those who enjoy both, check out the miniseries, "The Lost Room" with Peter Krause. I was hooked from beginning to end.

Another example of riveting storytelling, great acting, and compelling characters. WOW.

Guess what...?

I got a letter from SDSU this afternoon. I have been officially accepted to the Masters in Social Work program!

I still need to work out the logistics (mostly to determine whether I can handle the financial demands of the program) before I make a final decision. However, it is FANTASTIC to know my standing and to have the option to go to grad school this fall!!

I violated my long standing Exxon boycott today. The Exxon station happened to be across the street from my preferred gas station, Thrifty. Exxon was $4.19 whereas Thrifty was $4.57. (Don't tell my English activist friends, k?) Bleh.

I Am A: Lawful Neutral Human Druid (3rd Level)

Ability Scores:
Strength- 11
Dexterity- 12
Constitution- 12
Intelligence- 14
Wisdom- 13
Charisma- 13

Alignment: Lawful Neutral
A lawful neutral character acts as law, tradition, or a personal code directs him. Order and organization are paramount to him. He may believe in personal order and live by a code or standard, or he may believe in order for all and favor a strong, organized government. Lawful neutral is the best alignment you can be because it means you are reliable and honorable without being a zealot. However, lawful neutral can be a dangerous alignment because it seeks to eliminate all freedom, choice, and diversity in society.

Race: Humans are the most adaptable of the common races. Short generations and a penchant for migration and conquest have made them physically diverse as well. Humans are often unorthodox in their dress, sporting unusual hairstyles, fanciful clothes, tattoos, and the like.

Class: Druids gain power not by ruling nature but by being at one with it. They hate the unnatural, including aberrations or undead, and destroy them where possible. Druids receive divine spells from nature, not the gods, and can gain an array of powers as they gain experience, including the ability to take the shapes of animals. The weapons and armor of a druid are restricted by their traditional oaths, not simply training. A druid's Wisdom score should be high, as this determines the maximum spell level that they can cast.

On Pets...

Sean found another lump on Hope's abdomen last weekend. We also discovered a swollen, red fleshy tag on her heel. It might be a blister, but I'm not sure. She's had red marks on her feet for months, and I wonder if it has something to do with her wheel. The vet never mentioned them when he examined her.

I felt angry at first, and then numb. Sean told me that my taking Hope in for surgery may have bought her a few more months, but at her age, she's probably on her way out. I can't afford to take her in for surgery a second time. This aspect of having pets is so hard. I don't think I will get another rat any time soon.

Sean has been scheming for over a month about getting a Russian tortoise. He had tortoises as a kid and thinks they're fascinating. Plus they have minimal health problems and can live to be 50 years old. It's adoreable to watch him get so excited. I told him it's great if he wants to get a tortoise when we move in together. I doubt I'll be able to "bond" with a reptilian creature, but I think they're moderately interesting to watch. As for me, I think I'm done with having pets for a long time. Perhaps with the exception of a Betta fish.

We walked to Morley Field yesterday and sat in the dog park for a while. It was fun to watch the dogs run and play with each other. So many dogs look like their owners. We laughed and talked about them. (I hope none of the owners were offended by our comments.)

It is done.

No more Carnivale. *sigh* What an amazing epic story!!! One of my all time favorites. I'm glad the Special Features had commentary from the writers on where the plot was headed in Season 3. That series was a gift.

Well I did something scary today. (Scarier than the ropes course last weekend? Not sure. But anyhoo...)

I got that chalazion removed from my eye today. I've had that thing for almost a year, probably because the prospect of having it excised freaked me out. But it's ok now. And my eye is puffy and scary looking. "Hey, you should see the other guy..."

The doctor and assistant were gentle, soothing and patient. And no I didn't SEE any needles or sharp objects, which was my primary fear. Kind of a Clockwork Orange image there.

I walked home with a patch over my eye and thought about Nadine Hurley from "Twin Peaks". (The maniac with the eyepatch.) Does this mean I'll get super strength? Cool!

I was kinda sulky when I got home. I thought (as I stumbled around my apartment), this would be a perfect opportunity to enjoy someone else taking good care of me. But as always, I pulled through just fine on my own. And I'm proud of myself.

I realized that I mainly use this journal for angsty introspection and relationship-related entries. With that in mind, I've decided to clean out my friends' list to a small number of folks, predominantly women. If you're still interested in my general posts for public consumption, please check out my MySpace page, as AmericanAmelie. I apologize to those of you who reached out to me in the past... to whom I've given back little in return. I find it difficult to cultivate online friendships. So if we don't have a close connection in the real world, it's unlikely that I will set aside time to maintain an online correspondence. I hope this doesn't sound like a poor excuse, but I'd like to be honest and realistic. (Rather than avoid this conversation, which I've done for years.) So please don't take my decision personally. I sincerely wish all of you well. Perhaps if/when we meet again, we can genuinely reconnect. Thanks.

Another awesome first date! I love it when that happens. Now I'm completely knackered and have to get ready for work. With a cold. Yet I feel warm and fuzzy inside. :o)
